Not so long ago in our history, women had to struggle just to be able to attain jobs that once were only available to men, and the practice of law in particular was forbidden territory for women. Before the 1870s, women were seen as timid and delicate creatures, and just like children and lunatics, lacked full legal rights (Vago, 362). While women have made great strides in the working world and are now able to occupy positions formerly attainable only by men, there are still striking discrepancies in the pay received by the two genders. However, women lawyers are still reporting high levels of job satisfaction. Regarding the legal profession, according to John Hagan patterns of sectoral growth that are changing the structure of the profession are benefiting men more than women, and...continuing sex segregation is harming women, but not men, who practice in sex-typed settings (849). He goes on to state that women lawyers have made absolute gains in income, but men have made bigger gains, and the gender gap therefore may be widening. In 1985, the average salary for lawyers with the same level of experience, working at equivalent law firms for males was $75,000, while the average salary for females was only $46,500 (Hagan, 836).
